A Story About Old Yeller
A nice Methodist church was built across the road from the Willow Pond school house. It had a cupola. John Washington Glover donated the organ. The Glovers were all big singers. There were lots of things going on at the church. They were real strict. You couldn’t hardly get a program fixed up that they would call okay. There were no parties or anything rowdy. Every summer the brush arbor would be re-covered for the big revival. All the community would come. It had cooled off and the preacher was just getting started good. In the distance Grandad’s “Old Yeller” was baying. He got closer. He was after a rabbit and it was trying to get away. The rabbit come right up the center aisle. Old Yeller was baying at it’s heels. Grandad jumped up, whooping his britches with his hat “Get him Yeller! Get him Yeller!” When it got quiet the preacher said “Well now that Mr. Gill has took care of Old Yeller, shall we go on?” Old Yeller had been shut up in the smoke house, so he couldn’t go to church. Dad was a teenager and had let him out on purpose.
