Oaks Crossing– by Louise

It was a well know natural crossing place over the Brazos River, the only one for miles. Herds of buffalo had used it- the Indians and a stagecoach come there to cross. I have read a lot about the well known crossing, but never found a name for it- until---

GD Oaks and Lucy come in 1872 from Virginia. They bought land on a high hill just north of the crossing. They built a rock home with long narrow windows, because that was the way homes were built in Virginia. Neighbors here, thought it was to fight Indians. The first big house burned and they built another one, just like it.

Their only child, John, married Sudie, Papa Gills sister. Aunt Etta said that she was tickled to get invited to parties there; because it had stairs to the second floor. The only stairs around. She liked to climb them and then look down. She was always having fun, dragging that leg around from the Polio, when she was a baby.

One high place, south of town, was a bluff overlooking miles of the Brazos, a giant beautiful valley. It was a favorite picnic place, for many people. A main Walmart heiress, she has a beautiful home there among the giant trees.

Billy Sunday was in Mineral Wells and GD Oaks was showing him around. You could see so far, across the big valley. Billy Sunday asked GD Oaks if the place had a name, it did not. He thought it should be called 'Inspiration Point', and it was from that time.

At the big fourth of July Picnics, there was barrels of lemonade. There was a little store, dance hall and a tearoom. We all celebrated the fourth of July- as much as Christmas. Now it is all fenced off; private property.
